I am in the process of trying to find a buyer for my early 2011 13" MBP (2.3 GHz base w/500GB HD). I was offered a Sony A-700 w/ 18-70 kit lens plus an additional $200 for a trade.

I know nothing about DSLRs but have been looking for a new hobby so I thought I might consider the offer. Does anyone know if this is a good trade? Are the A700s a good camera? How is the image quality compared to today's DSLR models?

Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Used A700 cameras go for about $500 with kit lens on average.
So no I don't think it's a good deal.
They are good cameras but also over 3 years old tech w/ 12mp.

I agree with dukeblue91. I think you'd be getting the bad end of the deal.

Thanks guys, I might have to ask for more cash to even out the trade more. Can anyone tell me how these cameras are quality wise? Will a newbie photographer be happy with it? Thanks! Anyone know of a cheap lens upgrade?

Bad trade. I don't know if I would even ask for more cash. Why not just keep the MBP? You can pick up a Nikon D3100 ($650) or Canon T3 ($500) with a kit lens. Unless you're strapped for cash. Then it's a different story.

I just upgraded to the 15 inch rMBP so have no use for a 13 in anymore as I have a MBA for portability.
