I know that the 5770 graphics card works in the first generation Mac Pro, but can the machine handle two 5770 cards?

yes, but it will be bottlenecked very bad from the slot speed.

two options:

8x 8x, lose up to 20% performance on both cards

16x 4x, lose up to 40% performance on second card

bottlenecking

I'm more concerned about the CPU bottlenecking than that of the pcie slot..
Will any type of recent medium-high-end graphics be heavily bottlenecked by the cpu and pcie slot?
I'm a moderate gamer... I have a 1920x1080p display and i like playing games like crysis 2 and other graphic intensive games.
How will the 5770 perform in those games with the two dual core "woodcrest" cpus?

thanks

the 5770 is pretty good. its not mindblowing but its enough to play games at a high setting.

as far as i know, in osx having dual gpus doesnt help aside from supporting more monitors. for instance one card will not increase performance on a monitor connected to another card.

in windows you can link them in crossfire which would increase performance.
