If you put a second partition on a MBP can you afterwards revert back to a mac partion erasing the second partition if you download ubuntu on to it?
 
It doesn't install hardware for sound drivers etc. does it?

Not really no. It's linux after all. It's meant for tinkerers.

Unless you need all available computing power, why don't you simply install it in a virtual machine? No partitioning required.
