I'd like to dual boot OSX Mountain Lion with my current macOS Sierra. I tried running a VM but it didn't work. I was just wondering how I could dual boot with both OS versions to share data. I'd like all the home folders to be shared by both operating systems. Does anyone know how? Is it even possible? Any advice is welcome, thanks!

You won't be able to share the home folders without problems, because preference files and the like aren't all going to be compatible between the two versions. You can partition your Mac's disk, and install the other operating system there, as long as your Mac supports both operating systems.
What didn't work with the virtual machine? The application you're trying to use, or getting macOS to run in a virtual machine?
