I am looking to buy a 2nd display for my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inch 2019) (4096x2304). I am at loss at which one to buy. Does the 2nd display have to be 4096x2304, as well. I would like it to be an Apple but am willing to get a different brand if it is below 500.00.

No -- other sizes and resolutions should work fine. My understanding is that macOS should automatically detect the resolution of the new display. You can also change settings for the new display separately from your main display. You might want to do this to make text and UI elements look bigger or smaller on the new display, for example.

That said, it seems that macOS sometimes works better with some monitors than with others. I'm not able to give specific recommendations (my second display is an ancient model). But you could look through the threads in "Mac Accessories" for what worked for other people.

Another thought is to buy it from somewhere that has good/convenient return policies, perhaps a local store. Then you could try it out and if unhappy return for refund.
