Dual display full screen issue

I have my Macbook Pro hooked up to my tv.

All I want to do is have vlc open on the tv, in full screen, and still be able to use my Macbook, but the Macbooks screen goes black when I fullscreen vlc on the tv.

This can't be the way full screen is supposed to work surely?

Can this be fixed?

VLC > Preferences > Video > Uncheck "Black screens in Fullscreen mode"
