I have a 2017 MBP on Mojave 10.14
I bought a USB C adapter that has a HDMI port and a VGA port
I plugged one monitor in the HDMI and the other monitor in the VGA
Both monitors work but my computer sees only 1 monitor instead of 2 separate monitors.
So both monitors are mirroring each other
Is there a way I can break this up so they display as 2 separate monitors?

I did a lot of research on this when trying to get 2 external monitors and many adapters simply have HDMI and VGA and are designed to mirror each other. I personally bought this and found it works brilliantly for me:

So unfortunately most standard USB-C adapters will NOT support dual monitor EXTENDED monitors, only mirrored displays.

In order to get a dual EXTENDED display set up with only one plug in device, you will need a Thunderbolt 3 docking system. The only thunderbolt 3 adaptor I know of that is not a full dock system that support dual extended display support is this one from Caldigit: https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-Thu...5&sr=8-4&keywords=caldigit+thunderbolt+3+dock

Otherwise you will have to invest in a thunderbolt 3 dock from Caldigit or OWC to get dual extended external displays from one port on your MBP (I personally use a Caldigit TS3 and love it).

Edit: I posted the wrong link for the smaller TB3 adaptor. Please see the updated link above.
