Dual external on air with Startech USB32HD4k no longer working

I have one LG 27 inch monitor over thunderbolt, and another over HDMI to usb-c on a startech to a little VAVA dock, and it won't show the 2nd screen anymore. Not sure how to troubleshoot it, but I wonder if using BetterDisplay to set up a Dummy to change the laptop's resolution higher than allowed affected anything. Any ideas?

I ordered another displayLink adapter, the same model, and same results. so its either hardware on the air or software. should i try to connect in safe mode?

Displaylink software was not actually running. Checked to start at login now. Human error.
