I need to blow the money I made scalping iPads this Friday. I want to take the CD drive out of my MBP and replace it with a second hard drive, so that I can have one small SSD boot drive, and a large HDD for storing other stuff.
I have been looking at Hard drive caddies for this purpose, and this is the cheapest I have found:
http://www.buy.com/prod/2nd-sata-ha...15/q/sellerid/18700237/loc/101/219129107.html
so i have a few questions:
1. I have a 2008 MBP 15", which according to some website has a SATA connection. So why do I need to buy a SATA to SATA converter? Could I not just pull the superdrive out, connect the hard drive straight on there, and fashion some kind of plastic deal to keep it in place? I don't like the idea of parting with $20 just to get a metal holder, but would be more willing if it actually serves some technological conversion function. Would a quick card board one do, or should I make a nice plastic one? I don't happen to have a forge to make a metal one like the one in the listing.
2. Can i just connect the SATA CD drive to my 2.5" hard drive to USB enclosure? There isn't plastic on it that will prevent it from physically working, so would the computer use it? I see no reason it wouldn't. I would still like to be able to read CDs on the occasions when I need to do that, but I don't wanna buy a new cd drive, since I have one right there inside and I already own a SATA to USB.
3. What size would you get for the boot drive if you were doing this? Don't go crazy, eBay and PayPal and sales tax at the store and express shipping took most of my money.
