Since DVDs and DL DVDs are part of the same specification, they will either both stick around or both go away.~Shard~ said:...
Or will DVDs themselves fall by the wayside, leaving DL DVDs and Blu Ray?

DVDs aren't going away that fast. People won't stand for their video libraries being unusable if their DVD player dies. And as for computer usage, too many things are archived on DVD for it to go away too soon.
BluRay drives should also support reading current DVDs (single and DL). I do know that I will make another copy (or 2) of my photo archive on BluRay recordables when they come out. Partially so I don't have to worry about the longevity question and partially so I can have a copy of the archive on a lot fewer disks. I'll be keeping the old DVD until they're unusable. (Either degraded media or can't get DVD readers anymore.)

And they certainly werent as prevalent as they are today in stock PCs
So I think he meant that burners ARE years off. And hes probably right when it comes down to writing over 2X and not paying $5000 for the burner.

qzak said:just to make things clear, Dual Layer DVDs are not something new. The dvds you buy in the stores are DL DVDs.
just from reading some of the above posts i got the feeling some people thought DL DVDs were a new format, just wanted to reassure 'em that it's not, it's actually more like what you buy than your previous blank dvds.
In thinking about what the OP asked above, my answer would have been very simliar to qzak's, in that since DL-DVDs have been out for so long (and are so popular), I don't think it'll suffer the same fate that Beta experienced.whiteg said:2) Is DL DVD so esoteric that it will become like Beta tapes--hard to find a player for or necessary to change media in a few years?
