I'm looking for an ARM to float above my desk, but the catch is that it needs to be for one notebook + 27" display, not two displays. anyone know of some good products?

Monoprice has them or at least something that may work here, but it is wall mountable. Link to monoprice. If you scroll down they are DVD and LCD monitor mounts, but I don't see why you couldn't use it as a laptop holder. Plus they are less than 40 dollars.

I have used Workrite PA4000 (Poise Dual) arm to mount Dual 27" Thunderbolt displays. Apple shows weight as 23.5 lbs per monitor and Workrite arm is rated at 22 lbs per monitor.. factor in that the Apple stand is @ 2lbs and you are in the ball park. Using 2 VESA adapters from Apple store.. It is working fine. Tension adjustments on arm for tilt and lift are set near maximum and we are not experiencing any unwanted sag or tilt. As always YMMV.. But for my needs.. This worked well.

im a huge fan of this MobilePro Desk Mount Combo, available from apple
