Hello all,

I'm considering a Dual SIM setup on my iPhone (I'm UK based FYI), but not sure if what I want to do is how it can be used as I've never done this before.

Basically, I am with EE-5G coverage is brilliant in my area-best of all the networks. However, I work in a Signal deprived location (my location has changed within the building I work), and am there for 6+ hours a day. We're not allowed to connect to the work Wi-Fi, so other than being able to access emails on my desktop, I have no access to anything else. What usually then happens at the end of the day, when I hit signal again, is that I'm bombarded with notifications and messages etc. I get it's a first world problem, but there are instances during the day when I do genuinely need to access stuff on my phone. Due to filtering on the network, I can't always access the information that I need on the work internet on my desktop either.

So, with that in mind, a few of my colleagues, who also suffer signal deprivation, get perfect signal with Vodafone. I had considered switching to Vodafone fully, but their data coverage on the whole in my area is pretty poor-with the exception of the area I work in, where they get perfect signal. One colleague even gets excellent service from a provider that uses the Vodafone network.

In my head, what I'd like to do is setup a dual SIM on my phone-have my main number that is just active all the time, but have a cheap SIM that I can switch to during my working days to allow me to access all the 'stuff' on my phone that requires data. Is this possible? And would the likes of WhatsApp and Messages still work in the same way? I pay very little for my main SIM, and have found another SIM that would suit my needs for about £6 a month, so the cost is minimal.

What I want to hear is, "Yes, that's exactly how it works!", but in reality, I feel like I'm probably missing the mark...?

Thanks in advance!
Dan

You can actually have up to 2 SIMs enabled at the same time so you can leave both always on. If you enable allow cellular data switching, the phone will automatically use the other SIM when your main SIM doesn’t have signal.

Do note, unless you have the HK/China model, you’ll need to use eSIM for one of your SIMs.

That's brilliant-thankyou, but just to check-should my WhatsApp and Messages still work ok? I know WhatsApp is tied to a mobile number, so although it does use data, will it need the registered number/cellular connection to verify that it can be used-or is this something it can verify on the device? I'm conscious that if I add an extra SIM, it will also add a new number to the device.

Apologies for the excess questions, it's new territory-I don't want to over complicate the process or make it worse by thinking I'm making it better!

As long as you leave your main SIM always turned on, iMessage should continue working with your main number.

WhatsApp, it doesn't really matter if the main SIM is on or off as that one only checks on initial setup, I believe.

The 2nd SIM does add an extra number. It's up to you if you want to enable/disable it for iMessage and FaceTime. I don't think WhatsApp allows multiple numbers so as long as you don't change WhatsApp settings, it should be fine.

Yes and yes

I’ve lived abroad for years and years with a double sim setup

My “main” number is my French one, the one I’ve always had since my childhood. It’s used for WhatsApp etc, so consider it would be your EE number

And my 2nd was whatever number of the country I was in at the time and this is the ones that Ive always used for data if I was outside of France. So it would be your Vodafone number

It’s kind of like they merge if I can say it like that, you’ll receive on your WhatsApp EE number messages pulled by the Vodafone number data plan

That’s great to know, thank you! I’m going to sort it out tomorrow and try it out on Monday. I’m not addicted to my phone in any way, but I didn’t realise just how often I use it for things during the day-genuinely an inconvenience having no mobile or data signal!

So, just to update this incase anyone stumbles across it in the future, it does work exactly the way I thought and others confirmed.

I’m using EE as my main SIM and have set the phone as such, I opted for VOXI as my second SIM-£10 p/m with 60GB data (my main EE SIM is only £7 a month)-and true to form, when my data signal drops with EE, the VOXI SIM kicks in. Messages and WhtasApp still work as they should, displaying as me when I message people. The only (and obvious difference) is if I call someone with no EE cellular connection, the VOXI number comes up instead. But, that won’t ever happen as I don’t use my phone for calls at work, and that’s the only time I have no signal.

So, overall, a great solution. Thanks to the guys that dropped comments for your help 👍👍
