iPad Duet on iPad Laggy

Hello,

I am running a 'relatively' ancient mac and ipad combo.
Late 2011 Sandy Bridge 15" MBP and an iPad 4
I tried using the iPad 4 as a Duet display and I'm finding it super laggy!
Further, everything that I do on the mac also becomes super laggy when Duet is on.

However, here's the weird part - CPU is still at 4% and Memory has like 50% free!
I tried switching between Integrated GPU and Discrete Radeon GPU - no avail.,. I tried turning off Retina and making it 30fps...no dice...

Any ideas??
