Is there any new technology on the iPhone 16 that would provide good quality video if I zoom in or will it still suffer from resolution loss as all the order iPhones? If there is a resolution last, then I will have to stick with the pro and use the 3X or 5X. too many kids videos with all the different sports that I needed for what I was hoping to go with the base model that is much lighter. Thank you.

No, not as far as I know. The non-pro models still come with the standard camera and a wide angle, rather than a standard and a zoom/telephoto like the 7Plus/X/XS

With both the iPhone 13 in and also 16, if I simply use two fingers to pinch out, was I using Optical zoom or digital zoom (not using the 3x button)

Why does the base model show optical zoom in the comparison chart? Just search for optical on this page. Doesn't this mean the base mode have a 2x camera zoom lens and can record video at 2x without resolution loss?

The powerful new camera system helps users capture both everyday moments and cherished memories like never before. The 48MP Fusion camera enables a 2x optical-quality Telephoto option, which is like having two cameras in one,

My understanding is that this is essentially accomplished through cropping, and since the sensor is 48MP, you can still capture 24MP of “real data” after cropping

Digital zoom. With the 13 Pro, if you're not exactly on 0.5x, 1x, or 3x, then you're doing some sort of digital zoom. Also, if lighting conditions are poor (i.e. indoors), the 3x zoom could be doing a 3x digital zoom from the 1x camera, or 1x could be doing a 2x zoom from the 0.5x camera because those lenses let more light in. The same will apply for the 16 Pro, but with 5x instead of 3x. If lightning is poor, 5x will likely be doing a 5x digital zoom from the 1x camera.

There's a thread about it from last year's 15 Pro Max here:

Well I'm more concerning with video, not photos
It gets a little more complicated with video. The above still applies, but it also gets cropped/resized/downscaled to a 1080p (2.1MP) or 4K (8.3MP) video depending on your camera settings.

Correct. You're on the right track, except it's a 12MP full resolution photo.

Here's the section of the keynote explaining how that works.

What a detailed answer - thank you! Have you seen a comparison video that shows the 2x zoom with this Fusion Lens vs any other kind of regular 2x lens and how much resolution loss are we talking about? If it's simply going from 4k to 1080p, that's not bad IMHO

We probably won't see any comparison videos or reviews until this weekend or next week, after people have received their phones and had a chance to test them out.

I may be jumping the gun, but what’s your gut feeling here, are most people going to be satisfied with the 2x video resolution with this fusion lens?
