I have started getting into e-ink devices after I recently purchased a Supernote Nomad, which I use on a daily basis, especially for notes. I have sideloaded various Android apps on it, such as Firefox and Sync for Reddit. It's a great little device and easy enough to carry around. My eyes feel so much better when I am on the device since it is an e-ink screen. The best part of the device is its stylus—they come with a ceramic nib which never needs to be replaced. I tried the reMarkable in comparison, but the tips on its stylus wore away too quickly for me and the device is just too large to carry around.

My Supernote purchase has me wanting a dumb phone, particularly a Light Phone III. There's also the Mudita Kompakt and the HiSense A9 Pro.

What does everyone think about dumb phones and e-ink devices?

I like the idea and wouldn't be a bad phone to carry around especially as a second phone where you can get great battery life reduce strain on the eyes.

My first own mobile phone was a very dumb one, but at least it had Snake. (My current iPhone runs this one, but it's just not the same). Good enough! The fact that I bought a smartphone at some point annoys me for several reasons: Constant availability takes up a lot of time (and even stress) - and you generally waste a lot of time doomscrolling and other nonsense because it's simply available.

I wish I didn't need a smartphone anymore.

E-ink devices, on the other hand, are simply worse books in my opinion.

Can't speak to the phones, but I still love my Kindle. A few years back I replaced it with an iPad mini for some extra versatility while out on the road, but I've been back to reading on my Kindle while at home. The e-ink is just so much nicer for pure reading than an LCD, especially at night. I also kind of feel that it's easier to fall asleep after using my Kindle, but that might just be a placebo thing - I dunno.

@dmr727 - I love my kindle! I tried hard to stay away from it at first because I didn't want another electronic device but the space saving is huge. No more carrying around monstrous 600+ page books (looking at your Sanderson) instead I carry all of them in a device that weighs a few ounces and fits in my back pocket!

I have a Supernote Nomad which I use for all my sketch and notes at work. I love it. I love the size and distraction free format. I’m not sure I’m ready to switch to a simple e-ink phone but I fully understand the concept. I’ll watch the reviews closely.

How long have you had your Nomad for? I’ve had mine for a month. It’s already become one of my most-used devices ever. Supernote’s note system is just amazing, and my sideloaded apps have been working great. A gem of a device.

I got it in September. It's still running great and I'm not tempted by the bigger one. I use it as a notepad replacement. It's not capable of working with my PDFs so I still use an iPad 13 for marking up. I'm an architect and our PDFs are huge and colourful. iPad is the only thing that works reliably with those.

Like anything, the right tool for for each job sometimes means you need lots of tools.

TCL makes smartphones with a display that tries to mimic epaper. Unfortunately, I have not found a place in the US that sells them, other than fringe carriers where you have to live in their service area.

Daylight makes a tablet.

For me, the phone has to be able to run WhatsApp (unfortunate, but that is how friends & family from abroad communicate), and have a usable browser.
