Dumb question; Mac Mail & iPhone sync without Mobile Me

I searched everywhere and seem unable to find the solution to my problem. I just got my new iphone and can’t seem to sync with my iMac’s email program. The download to my iphone is great, but how do I sync what I have done on my iphone back to Mac mail?

I know Mobile Me is probably the answer, but I was under the impression I can sync iPhone & iMac’s mail when connected without having to purchase the additional software.
