I have a 1TB LaCie external d2 hard drive with an 800 FW running into my iMac. When I read the words "daisy chain" I'm assuming I can hook up an identical second external drive to the first one, and therefore only use one USB port in the iMac to run both drives? And in that case I'd also use an 800 FW between the two drives?

You cannot mix USB and FW. You can daisy chain FW as long as the entire chain is FW. You cannot daisy chain USB at all.

Mac - FW - HDD - FW - HDD - FW - HDD.

USB uses a "tree" topology with hubs to connect multiple devices.

Daisy Chain

Right,

I meant to say FW port and not USB. But BalamW's diagram
(Mac - FW - HDD - FW - HDD - FW - HDD) tells me that I can run one after anothert and thereby save a FW port on the iMac (or whatever it is called.)

Thanks all!

Yes, just be sure to have enough power down the line. As long as the devices are all self-powered (plug into AC), you should be fine.
