Dumb question (sorry) about txt plan

I'm on ATT and only txt/pic txt within the US.

1) If I download one of these JB txt msging apps, can I cancel my $30/month txt MSG plan?

2) any additional in-app or per-txt-msg cost for using these apps?

3) any reliability issues?

4) which app would be the best one to use?

5) other then losing my unlimited mobile to mobile plan, when I cancel the AT&T txt plan are there any other draw backs I should be aware of?

1) im pretty sure att requires a texting plan with the iphone
2) depends on the app
3) never used cant say for sure

5) you likely get a separate number for texting so your friends will have to keep 2 numbers, one for calls one for texts.

"Depends on the app" applies to both 1 and 2. Not all JB SMS apps are exactly the same.

There's so much wrong in this post

No carrier requires a texting package. It was once bundled with data with the first iPhone, but never since.

There's no extra cost except for the cost of the app. You use it like the stock SMS app.

You will not have two numbers.

I got google voice account and number this morning, and I can send txt and make calls with that. However no functionality for MMS. This is something that is very much needed.

would bitesms work for me? In the sense that I could just use that to send all my txts including MMS, and cancel my txt plan?

If Bitesms is not a good option, what would be a better app?

As I'm googling about this I come across this page.

So I downloaded SMS GV extension from Cydia.

If I understand this correctly I can enter in txt msgs and MMS directly into the native Messages app or through biteSMS and the msg is sent through google voice, and not over ATT's network. Is this correct?
