Duplicate contacts can't be removed

I have a jail broken 3G
I am syncying f 1700 contacts through itunes
Every time it I sync it duplicates every contact

I have been to the "advanced" tab at the bottom of screen to say the desktop should over ride the phone but it is still posting duplicates.

I have emptied my desk top contacts into a sub folder called short list. But when I go to advanced it is still duplicating everything into the phones Contact folder because even "short list" is under Contacts. Can I delete everything unuder Contacts or export it to what? Will I really be able to get them back. Help?
