Duplicating AVCHD Disks

I have burned a blu-ray compatible DVD, using a stand-alone DVD recorder made by Sony (the camcorder hooks directly to it). It is my kid's school play, and the grand parents want copies. I can't easily burn another copy (long story), but it seems that copying the DVD does not produce a DVD that the blu ray player will recognize. What am I doing wrong, or how can I do this correctly?
