Hi all.

Being that the silver’s SS bezels are not PVD coated, as opposed to the graphite, what’s the benefit of going with a PVD coating as opposed to bare?

While the PVD is more durable, any micro scratches and blemishes are irreparable as opposed to the silver.

So while the Silver is likely to scratch easier, it’s still repairable which is a plus.

Is the benefit of the PVD coating in terms of durability enough that the more delicate surface of the silver isn’t worth its repairability?

Having an iPhone X initially in the space gray color, it still was prone to micro scratches and blemishes despite the PVD coating even in the Apple microfiber lined case. I switched to opted the silver because it can be easily repaired sans coating.

Is the durability of the PVD coating any better now, or is silver still the best bet?

Also, can minor scratches be buffed out of the PVD coating so long as they haven’t penetrated beyond the coating?

Thanks.

I had a silver iPhone X and the band got pretty scratched up but it's not something that's immediately noticeable. I now have the graphite iPhone 12 Pro and I am a bit worried that these scratches will be very visible and make the phone look like ****. I'm caseless btw.

Every graphite phone that i have had including the X and my 11 Pro Max has been in a case and pristine when i sold them so i have to assume that the PVD coating does its job. I am going caseless with my 12 Pro Max (Pacific Blue or Graphite)

That’s exactly my thinking and why I’m leaning towards getting the white 12 PM. My 11 PM has been scratched very badly despite carrying it in cases. But all the micro scratches were easy to remove. However the blue 12 PM is so beautiful...

Congrats on the new phone! Come back with an update in a little and let us know how the graphite is working out for you.

My 11 Pro was scratch free, however my 12 Pro came with micro scratches from the factory, and it’s obvious the graphite isn’t as durable as the space gray/black. This became evident when the Apple Watch Series 6 was released.

You’ve never had a graphite iPhone. And if you haven’t seen it in person, you won’t go caseless, it’s a fingerprint magnet.
