Hi all,

i have the smart keyboard folio for the iPad Pro 12.8”.

It has been around 1 year, and the case is showing very bad signs of wear.

there are 2 physical tears in the material, and the rest of the surface just looks terrible, botchy and peeling off.

Before i go and spend $600 Aussie dollars on the new magic keyboard, i‘m wondering if anyone has any photos you’d care to show on how well this ages ?

Appreciate that this is still quite new out in the market, But i think 1month+ will show some wear and tear,

I’m interested to see whether this is the exact same material and durability as the Smart Keyboard folio . . .

Thank you.

My story much more sad. You can see conditions of the keyboard after two month of not active exploitation.
Official reaction, we can change it but you should pay for new keyboard.
I am strongly recommend do not buy accessories from Apple!!!
It is not the first in my life but now it is last drop ...

That is truly shocking. Apple is already charging a lot of money for what is the most expensive keyboard case ever..

you would expect the material to be better.

here is a picture of my current Smart keyboard folio. It has started to peel.

If the super expensive magic keyblard is indeed using the same material, then it too will start peeling, flaking, and tearing after a year!

😱

Very sad to see this happening. Any product, especially a new one, there can be expected defective items. I hope this isn’t widespread. My MKB is about three weeks old and is heavily used. I just gave it a close inspection and it looks perfect.

I hope Apple makes your problems right.

I have serious concerns with my magic keyboard‘s long term durability. It’s the same material as the folio and my fear is that the corners of the case and edges of the trackpad (my fingers constantly rub it) may degrade significantly. Scuffs on the surface seems likely when putting it in and out of a backpack over the months. It makes me chuckle to think that I need a case/skin to protect a case.... If I keep this, I will retroactively add AppleCare, the first product I’ve purchased AC for my own personal use. The hinges also have me concerned with repetative opening and closing.

Usually I am not an early adopter and wait a cycle or two before purchasing a new product line but the MK had me intrigued.

Which is the reason why I don’t think this is good enough to pay $580 AUD.

I think there will be a new magic keyboard Once the new iPad pros get released , and i am just waiting for that and hopefully they will change the material.

This damn rubbery cheap material breaks apart after 1+ years, which is a terribly expensive temporary keyboard case If you think about it.

But this should not be required with a product at that price. However, seeing what has happened in the past, it seems it may be required. Not a good situation.

You’re right it’s not ideal. Leather would be a better material choice as the current one does mark too easily.

Marking is one thing but if it starts to tear and peel, that is more serious. I don't have one to examine but I wonder if the part where your hands rest and move against could be light metal or plastic to provide more durability. I realise that it must be something that does not damage the screen but this is somewhat akin to the Microsoft fabric on their recent laptops. It stained but I don't know if it peeled or tore.

My ASK did mark the keyboard within first few months. Mine was fine in terms of marks on my MK but I’ve not had it long so impossible to know how it will be say in 3-4 months.

Obviously people buying the MK I’m sure hope this lasts for 3-4 years as least and even when new models are out we all hope it will still support it. For 350 you would hope that is the case.

I was more concerned about the amount of dust and marks it was picking up rather than the durability of it. My ASK has fared ok.

I have put a skin on it which has definitely helped stop the day-to-day gathering of crud and I think it looks better - the recent iPad cases and accessories from Apple have been incredibly dull.

My Magic Keyboard is a damn dust magnet. I keep it on my desk and I do NOT eat at my desk as a general rule. But when I turn a light on to point directly at the desktop, the MK looks like a dust trap and it is driving me crazy. I have never had this problem before and it is making me nuts, as well as making me consider Brydge, or just wait for the new Logitech. Too much debris gets caught between these keys.

When not in use, I keep mine in a Incase case for the 12” MacBook.

Perhaps apple has priced this way too high for us to need to use a case to store a case...

no doubt this is a great product, but i seriously doubt it’s durability / longevity, and hence whether it’s Actually a good idea to spend so much money on it.

We now just need to wait for the Logitech combo touch to support the iPad Pro 12.9” .. And I think we have a winner.
