My MacBook Pro (late 2006), when you start it, it does that usual durrr durrr durrrr. But when I'm using it during the day, it does it like 20 times - sometimes 2 to 3 times in one go. What exactly is this?

The other day my machine had a kernel panic attack, so I'm wondering if it had to do with that?

Nominated for best topic title.

Try an SMC reset. Google it... at Apple.com.

Will do that, and yeah, I didn't know what to call it. :D.

And it could be related to the HD too, I dropped it a few months ago, kernel panics started happening right at boot, but they went away after like 20 restarts.

Damn, who else remembers the days when you could just beat your electronics into submission?

TV, Nintendo, VCR's, printers... Those bruised-knuckle days were the best days.

That whirring sound is the optical drive, not your hard disk.

Me! I used to hit my Sega Genesis, blow air into the cartridge, and shake it a bit.

So my SuperDrive is going out for the FOURTH time then?! FFS!

Guess it's not that super =\

It's not likely that it's going out. Just sounds like software or firmware. Did you try the reset?

Well with most older Apple portables, when you started or woke the computer, the optical drive would go, "zer-ee ert, derrr errer."

With modern Macs, they only make this sound on startup, "zip zeck"

Then, when you connected to the Internet, they would go, "psheeee neeee neeeee, nur, cur-wherrr err wllllllawm, ksh, kushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. You've got mail!"

It's that sound, right before the chime kicks in. Happens when you make it up from sleep too. I always joke and say that Usher got inspired from it for his song "OMG" cause the way he says 'oh my god' sounds like it haha.

Is fine now, is a lot quieter too overall. Thank you!
