DVD burn problem please help

Hello, I recently purchased a Sony DVD burner so I could convert my Fathers VHS tapes to DVD. I have tried both DVD-R and DVD+R and both seem to burn fine, but the only DVD player I can get the DVD to play in is the Sony DVD burner/player that it was burned in. I have tried three other DVD players and cant get any of them to work. Any ideas? I'd appreciate it.

These are just home movies. Nothing thats copyrighted, Ive even tried playing it on other sony DVD players with no luck. Im assumiong it some compatibility issue. is there fix that anybody knows of?

What encoding app did you use? iDVD? If so iDVD will only encode on a mac superdrive.
