DVD Disc Permission Annoyance

I am constantly backing up and moving files from one machine to the next via DVD or CD. Whenever I copy files from the DVD/CD to my hard drive the files keep the "read only" permissions from the DVD/CD.

This is driving me absolutely insane. I need to be able to quickly copy files and directories, open, manipulate and save. I don't have time to waste going through everything I copied and changing the permissions.

Is this normal behavior? If so, is there any setting I can change to make it go away, i.e. have it copy DVD/CD files as read/write.

Strange, when I copy things over, they end up with read write execute permissions for everybody, so I'd have to change them so that it only allows me to have write permissions. However, I am usually writing disks from Windows, maybe that's why.
