DVD does not appear on Desktop

I aborted a DVD burning operation and now I want to erase the DVD+RW. Only problem is that the disc doesn't show up on the desktop.

goto system preferences-->cd's/dvd's and click on when you insert dvd...

open disk utility.

that should work.
