I teach CPR and wanted to download my DVD's onto iTunes so that I can use my iPad and have that linked to my projector. I don't have a laptop to do this so this. I wanted a simple set up so I won't have to carry so much equipment. Every time I download the DVD it comes out choppy, pixelated, or it just doesn't come out at all. How can I upload my DVD so that I can watch the videos?

I have my Apple desktop, and Apple DVD drive.

What did you use to rip the DVD into iTunes? Handbrake?

In handbrake, what preset did you select?

(keep in mind that DVD’s are not high resolution to start with - they are 480p- but picking an inappropriate preset can make it worse)

For clarification, what exactly do mean when you say you “download” the DVD? A DVD is a physical volume so I’m assuming you’re trying to upload a ripped copy of the DVD contents from your computer to your iPad. Is this correct?

What condition is the source DVD in? Are there scratches or blemishes? Is it copy protected? You “think” you used Handbrake. That covers a lot of territory. We need as much detail and specifics as you can give to try to diagnose your problem.

I believe I left all the presets the way it is. I didn't change anything. It's been a while since I've done this because I gave up. I can try again.

I meant that I put the DVD in my drive and tried to upload it to my computer. It's a clean DVD no scratches. I know I used Handbrake and also used VLC. It would upload maybe the menu screen and play a clip of the DVD then it brakes up. The video goes out I may hear some of the audio.

How exactly did you “upload” the DVD to your computer. Describe the workflow (all the steps you took to accomplish the upload) in as much detail as possible. Do you understand what “ripping” means?

I insert the DVD to the drive, I close the video and drag the disc icon to the handbrake. pop up window talks about can not override copy protection from the disc, then it asks attempt to override. I click attempt anyway. Once finished, the video is all disproportioned. It also doesn't rip the whole DVD.

Handbrake "attempted" to override the copy protection but did not succeed. What you have there is what you get when you rip a DRM protected disk. Handbrake's "attempt anyway" rarely works. Even when it does work Handbrake will not retain the menu and file structure of the original DVD. You'll end up with many individual video files made from each of the DVD's menu items. It can be a steep learning curve in the beginning.

You need to Google and find the various Handbrake tutorials that are floating around the internet. There used to be, maybe still is, some software you could download and install that would allow Handbrake to do a better job of removing copy protection which, by the way, is technically illegal in most countries. I can say no more. Good luck.

Thank you very much. I will not continue with this process. I don't want any legal issues, I just thought it would be nice to have a copy of the tutorials on my iPad. Maybe I'll ask American Heart Association if they have a downloadable version. Thanks again
