DVD drive issues HELP PLEASE

HI I hope someone who's has the same issues can please help

I have recently bought a second hand macbook pro with no dvd drive , but two hard drives.

My operating system is Maverick.

I just bought a LG external dvd writer. But Macbook won't recognise the external dvd player. It will read simple date ..jps etc....but it won't play a dvd

Does anyone know if there is an update to accommodate the LG player? Or is there is a simple way to get Macbook to recognise the external player?

Try using VLC media player to play the DVD

I know DVD player for mac(the native app that comes with OS X) will only work with an internal drive.

Try another player such as VLC or mPlayerX
