dvd drive not recognized in system profiler

so here is the deal. i have two partitions on my macbook hd, one for testing and one for primary. both are running 10.5.5 at the moment

here is the problem, on my secondary partition, my dvd drive is fully functional and works perfect. on my primary drive, the optical drive is not recognized at all (not in system profiler and wont read dvds or anything)

i think i may have messed up a file that caused this. any idea what this file is? is it the AppleVIAATA.kext by chance?
