I have come across a dvd disc that will only play on a Mac Pro with an Intel processor. Is it possible to get an external DVD drive that will play these discs or will it be necessary to upgrade the basic equipment?
I have a G5 without the Intel processor, but reluctant to buy another computer, when, for most purposes . this works well.

When you say "play" what do you mean? Is it software or a DVD video? The CPU requirement makes it sound like it has a software component which, if it requires and Intel CPU, can never be made to run on a G5.

Yes, if this is a video DVD, then you are looking, most likely, at one of these two possibilities:

- the disc is scratched, and you just got "lucky" on the MP
- the DVD drive in the G5 is dying.

A disc with a computer binary executable -- a program of some kind -- is a different story.
