I recently replaced my optical drive in my 2009 MBP with an OWC SSD. I read about the potential problems with using apple's DVDPlayer application with an external drive (the workaround being modifying the DVDPlayer framework files). However, I like to rip my DVDs using RipIt or Mac The Ripper to .dvdmedia files to play with DVDPlayer.

I was successful in getting the DVDPlayer to recognize DVDs when inserted into my (now) external superdrive. However, anytime I'm on the go and I do not have my external superdrive plugged in, DVDPlayer will not let me play any of my .dvdmedia rips.

It would be preferable if it weren't necessary for me to have an optical drive connected just to play files on my hard drive. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

[I know I could just use VLC, but I'd really rather use the DVDPlayer if possible.]
