DVD player App on rMBP??

So I'm looking into swapping out my optical drive in my 2011 MBP in favour of a second HDD or SSD. I would then put the optical drive in an external case. The question is can I use the now external optical drive via USB on a retina MBP? If so what App could I use? I assume the rMBP does not come with the DVD player app cause there is no optical drive.

I'm pretty sure that you get DVD player anyway, as it comes with OSX.

Hmm okay. I figured that they might leave it out if there is no optical drive built in. Thanks.
