DVD Player automatically starts...

but I have turned it off in the preferences.

Scenario:

Every time I decide to burn lets say a DVD image. I drag it to Toast and I guess by the way Toast works the DVD image gets mounted. Then DVD Player starts up although I've unchecked all those options in the preferences. This is a mystery to me.
 
In your CD and DVD system preferences, set 'When you insert a Video DVD' to 'Ignore' rather than 'Open DVD player'.
I'm assuming that you've only fiddled with the DVD apllication preferences rather than the System preferences.
