DVD Player Doesn't Open

When I insert a video DVD into my external drive, the DVD player doesn't open. I've checked Settings to make sure that there's no problem, and I know the trouble is not with my external drive because I have two drives and the same thing happens when I insert a DVD in either one. There are some noises and the disk is ejected. Any suggestions?
 
Just wondering -- does it do the same thing if you try a CD (instead of a DVD) ?
