DVD player freezes

Brand new mac pro.

Try to play a video_ts directory that I copied to the desktop. DVD player will play it for 3 seconds, then freezes up.

Force quit.

Reload DVD player and resume play. It plays the next 3 seconds and then freezes up.

Same again. And again.

Downloaded vlc player for mac. Plays it flawlessly.

Why does OS X DVD player freeze up? Is this a common problem? I'm not impressed!

System specs:

8 core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro
2.5TB HDs
6GB RAM
