I have been running Leopard on my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5GHz since release and it has been very stable in general. A few application crashes now and then but no kernel panics at all. I watch a lot of DVDs on my Mac and have used surround speakers connected to the optical out for several years.

In the last few days however I suddenly have experienced two kernel Panics whilst playing DVDs and browsing the web something I do regularly. the first time I was chatting in iChat, had Mail, Safari, iCal, Activity monitor and iTunes running in the background. After the first panic I successfully watched several discs problem free but then I got another panic today with just Safari running.

Rember says my RAM is OK and I am watching another DVD now - anyone else having issues similar to this?

Here are the Panic logs for reference. I'd be grateful if someone with a ADC account could submit a bug report. It looks like if it is a bug it is in the AppleDBDMAAudio driver:

I finally managed to do the extended test with my AHT CD and it passed fine.

I do think it must be a software issue but it is difficult to see what has changed. I installed 10.5.4 on the 30th of June and I definitely watched several DVDs after that. I only normally do restarts for updates as I just put my machine to sleep at night. The only other updates I can see that have been installed are to do with the Mobile Me change over - iTunes 7.7, AOS 1.0 (I don't recognise this?), Mac OS X Update for Mobile Me 1.1, HP printer Drivers Update 1.1, iPhoto Update 7.1.4, iLife Support 8.3, iWeb update 2.0.4 and iMovie 7.1.4.

I can't see that this would have affect the DVD Player application or the Audio drivers?

My first Panic was on the 24th and the next on the 27th - I watched several DVDs between as well. It is very frustrating as I can't be 100% confident in running other applications with unsaved data just in case. I have trashed the DVD Player preferences just in case.

If AHT comes back fine then try running disk utilty from the install disk. Do the repair disk option, then do the repair permissions option. Then quit disk utility and open the password reset utility use the dump user ACL's option at the bottom. Also look at your hard drive's smart status in disk utility and make sure it still says "Verified." If you have adequate drive space, add another partition and try installing a clean copy of osx to the other partition. See if you have kernal panics on the new partition. I also have seen AHT and ASD not pick up on drive issues. If you have a copy of diskwarrior or techtool (standard version comes with applecare) then run that and do the most advanced scan you can for your hard drive (preferably with the surface scan enabled).

i had a problem with the dvd player once after an update (10.4.9 maybe, somewhere around there) and after fixing permissions it worked again fine afterward.

Well no problems with permissions or the disk directory according to Disk utility. It is not a free space issue as I still have 220GB left out of 698.

I guess barring a reinstall I can't get much further. I'm a little reluctant to do that if I can avoid it as everything else is working fine and even DVD player can work for days - it is shame it isn't just quitting once in a while - I really hate kernel panics - it is like having OS 9 again!

So after deleting the DVD player preferences I have used my machine normally including watching many DVDs whilst browsing the web and everything was fine until today (17/08/08) when I got another kernel panic.

The log was exactly the same as before

So it seems I can use the computer for days, maybe even weeks but at some point when watching a DVD I'm going to get a panic.
