I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I've searched and haven't come up with anything....

Will the dvd player on G5 OSX Operating System play purchased HD DVDs? All articles I have read say it will play DVD Studio Pro burned HD Discs....
I'm a little confused.

Thanks,
Jen

I think the problem is not so much DVD Player as it is support for HD-DVD drives. I don't think OS X really has that. And so, unless you can get a rip of the content of an HD-DVD onto your hard drive, there's no way for you to get the HD-DVD onto your Mac to play in the first place.

No need to apologize!

The simple answer is no, the current optical drives in the latest Macs cannot play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray media. HD content created via DVDSP or the like can be played, however these are still ultimately burned onto DVD discs, not HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs.

Happy new years to you, too! :)

I think it's reasonable to expect that Apple will do something about this at some point next year... When they start releasing computers with either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD's built in, it's likely that there will also be support for external devices on computers like your G5.

The biggest thing slowing down Apple is the lack of a "winner" in the hi-def DVD war.

Quite true. However I would argue that the HD format war is already over - and neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray won. ;)

Well... I personally wonder if the time isn't right for getting away from optical media and going hard-disk / online. Of course, iTunes Store does not sell hi-def content. :(

It's going to take some time... although this year definitely seemed to be a big win year for Blu-Ray.

Tough to say - it will probably all come down to whichever format the porn industry backs.

And that takes us pretty much full circle, doesn't it now? :D

No more commenting on my previous career!

That was very nicely done! :)

I'm happy with DVD and 720P for now, though!

Thanks. ;)

Yeah, I'm happy with 720p and DVD as well for now - 1080p isn't true 1080p yet (you always seem to have to read the fine print) and, well, we've already eluded to the whole Blu-Ray and HD-DVD issues.

"eluded"?!? Where the hell did that come from? Kay, no more crack for me today...

Anyway, I think we answered the OP's original question now, so we should probably stop (if we haven't frightened her away already! ;) :D)

I'm hoping Apple aligns with the HD-DVD camp but that's because I already have an HD-DVD player and I'm starting to build up a small library of movies.
