DVD Problems

My problem began when I was no longer able to burn a dvd from iDVD.
I then tried to reboot from my install dvd but my Mac wouldn't do this.
However it plays dvds fine.
So is my internal dvd frazzled or is this a software issue? Should I reinstall my iDVD software or what?
