DVD-R or DVD+R on Mid-2007 MacBook

Which would you recommend using on a Mid-2007 MacBook? I tried using DVD+R DL on my MacBook. Both the Apple Support Page and Everymac.com say that my MacBook could have used the dual-layer discs, but it didn't work. That is why I am cautious about even single-layer DVDs as well now. I just want to be sure. Which do you use?
