DVD-RAM Drive not showing on 10.4.9

I have just upgraded to 10.4.9 on my ageing G4 Sawtooth AGP.
Problem now is that the DVD-RAM drive installed does not show up.
Any thoughts on the subject would be much appreciated.
Also I seem to have mislaid the Caddy that came with the machine - does anyone know ( or have one spare) where or if you can purchase one?
