I'm debating on whether getting a DVD Recorder and directly dubbing hi8 video from my old Sony camcorder to DVD, THEN transfering that video over to my MBP (is that possible)? I want to edit in iMovie '09.

Or would the Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac be a better option?

I have the Canopus ADVC 110, connects to the Firewire port (with FW400-FW-800 adapter, or suitable cable)

You have s-video in and normal analog plugs. There's also an output on it.

Works great. I even converted footage from my digital tv-box to my mac (had to change aspect ratio on the tb-box though)
