Hi guys...

my father just got an iMac 24" and he is going to use it to view DVDs as well!
Since he lives in Italy, but has a lot of US DVDs, from when living here in the US, he wants to know if there's an application that permits him to change regions depending on the DVDs...

Thank you!
Emanuele

Unfortunately there isn't. The Mac OS can change the region 5 times before you are locked into whatever region it is on. This is hard coded into the DVD drive and mandated by the movie industry, not Apple's fault. The best/easiest thing to do probably is to get an external that is either region free or set to the a different region as the internal and he would have to remember to play DVDs in the correct regioned drive.

A few people have been able to flash the internal DVD drives on Macs to region free, however, flashes have not been made for newer drives and it is risky in that you could break the drive.

Some people might tell you to try VLC as it ignores region coding by accessing the disk raw data, however, on new drives this no longer works either.

I'm not 100% sure, but if he were to use handbrake he could simply rip them and watch them regardless of region.

Not sure though...
