What are the best apps that I could use to rip DVDs to my Mac? Ideally, I want to rip to DivX or something similar and I'd prefer it if it was free.

Handbrake. Free as free, can rip to a number of different formats (forget divx, use H.264 encoded .mp4 files - the quality is head and shoulders above anything divx can do) and you can rip individual episodes of TV series DVDs by setting up a queue.

Give "Mac the ripper" a try

Dave :)

MacTheRipper is for ripping DVDs to full-quality Video_TS folders. Handbrake rips and re-encodes to different, smaller formats.

They're two different programs, not competitors.

The OP asked about encoding to divx, MacTheRipper does not have this functionality and is why I did not suggest it.

Ah well, ripping to VOB might be ok because I'm then using iSquint to convert it to MP4 for my iPod.

Sorry,
I haven't used either, but a friend of mine is always ranting on about how good Mac the ripper is.

Sorry again for Mis-Information.

Cheers Dave :)

I don't think MTR is, but it's mainly read/write and not processor intensive. Going UB won't make a huge difference.
