dvd-rw insallation

im trying to install a hp 300n/nec dvd-rw in a mac 10.3.9 sawtooth g4, plays dvd's, doesnt mount cd's and recognizes blanks but has burn error. any ideas is there a firmware flsh im suppose to do since it was in a pc?
