dvd screen scrambled

I am having problems with the dvd player on my powerbook g4. My computer is probably about five or six years old. It has a MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8121 drive. I am able to play dvds, but the screen is scrambled. I have tried playing multiple dvds. I have also tried a cd/dvd drive cleaner. Any ideas on what might be wrong?
