DVD Versus MKV Converted to M4V

I'm just trying to learn about this all.


I downloaded a few movies in MKV format and have converted them to m4v using handbrake.

Sometimes the original 720p mkv is smaller in size or the same to the original DVD rip with 5.1 etc...

Is there any benefit to the original dvd rip versus the 720p mkv

I guess my question is, even after the conversion from the mkv to m4v, if the mkv going to have better overall quality?

DOes that make sense?
