Somewhere over the rainbow
I backed up my install files (for 3rd-party apps) onto two DVD-R's, using Toast Titanium, in Panther. Now, some months later, I want to reinstall some things, so I put the DVD's in my PB's superdrive (now upgraded to Tiger with an archive and install).

The DVD's spin, and showed up in Finder for about 30 seconds, but then disappeared from both Finder and the desktop, and now won't show up at all - they just won't mount.

I then put them in my husband's XP-machine, and can read them and transfer the files to an external HD.

The PB can now read the files from the external HD.

I can read commercial DVD's and other peoples' homemade DVD's, both in Finder and via VLC (movies, of course), so apparently the drive itself is fine.

I have no idea if this is a Panther/Tiger issue, but I suspect it might be. An iMovie DVD I burned in iDVD in Panther won't play with audio now in VLC, but will play with audio in DVD player. But maybe that's connected with how VLC behaves in Tiger??
