DVI-D to HDMI not working?

Using an old Macbook pro (like pre-2008, silver keyboard type) and I've got a DVI-D to HDMI cable connecting it to a 42" plasma screen. The connections are all set up fine, everything fits snug in its slot, but the TV isn't getting any signal. Ideas?
