I have two 11.6" Macbook Airs in front of me.
One is a Rev. D (Oct. 2010), the other is a new 2012 I7.
I connect the Rev. D to an external display using a single-link DVI minidisplay adaptor. It connects up and has no problem running the monitor at 1600 x 1200.
I connect the 2012 Air via the exact same DVI adaptor/cable and I cannot connect to the monitor. The computer and the monitor do see each other at all.
The new Air will connect via a VGA minidisplay adaptor, but the external resolution maxes out at 1400 x 1050 so the external monitor is very soft.
Do the newer Airs require a dual-link DVI adaptor to run resolutions as low as 1600 x 1200?
Is the downgrade from the NVIDIA GeForce 320M to the Intel HD Graphics 3000 to blame?
I have read that the DVI output signal is "weak" on the Airs. Could this be to blame?
Also, who made the brilliant decision that the "detect displays" button should be hidden on OSX 10.8? We can also no longer switch resolutions via the menu bar?
