I'm presented with a choice here. I can either throw some cash to the wind, and buy a monitor with DVI (for the macbook hookages)

However, I could also use the large monitor I currently use for gaming and tv. Unfortunately, it is lacking a DVI port, instead boasting your bog standard VGA affair.

Now I'd want to be running at 1680 x 1050.

So!

First off, it is possible to attain this resolution though VGA, right?

If so, would the difference in quality between VGA and DVI great enough to splooge a load of money that, frankly, I could do with?

Cheers in advance...

Yes, VGA will work at 1680x1050, but because the signal has to be converted from Digital to Analog back to Digital, it will loose clarity and be a bit fuzzy.

If it has another digital input, like HDMI, I would use that instead, or try it through VGA and see if it will work for you.

VGA should be able to handle it as long as your monitor can handle that resolution. The quality of the display is different, I notice a sharper image on DVI vs. VGA.
